Talking About Values

Back when I launched my retail/manufacturing business, I had a set of five core values; I had given them a lot of thought and they were the foundation of the business I built. I loved them.

But, I learned that at about five years in, as my business grew from one employee to 15, our values started to evolve. And more so, I found that the behaviors and how I interacted with my staff on a daily basis instilled values more than those I chose five years ago when I was writing my business plan.

I decided that our company values needed to be determined by the people that are on the ground and work with me every day. So, I facilitated a company meeting. There was a worksheet involved, gluten free pizza, and a whole lot of fun.

What happened next, blew me away! I had a feeling about what values would resonate but what I didn't anticipate was not only the alignment of my staff but that they came up with one I never would have thought of!
